Indeed, no one really speaks of Dany’s mother, considering her father took most of the limelight throughout GoT history. But apparently, the Mad King’s wife died after suffering complications from Daenerys’ birth. Aerys becomes unhinged, paranoid, and murderous throughout his reign, leading to Robert’s Rebellion.

Unfortunately, it was around now that Aerys began to demonstrate a rather mercurial personality, flitting from uncompleted project to uncompleted project. As he approached death with no heir apparent, he convened a Great Council to decide who would succeed him among at least 14 contenders, with the vote coming down to his two grandchildren Rhaenys and Viserys. After the death of her mother, Viserys named Rhaenyra as his heir, but the birth of his first-born son just a few years later leads to some disputing her right to the crown. Baelon and his sister married and had two sons, Viserys and Daemon Targaryen. Baelon died of a “burst belly” (perhaps a burst appendix) before his father passed away.

As we learn in the fantasy series, eventually, this young dragonlord would rise to lead the house and turn his ambitions west to the Seven Kingdoms, seeking to unite them under his banners. So the Targaryen family tree took root in Westeros, and the House of the Dragon began.

We first meet Laena at age 12 as she’s being offered in marriage by her parents to a mortified King Viserys. She thankfully fares better after that and winds up distinguishing herself as a dragonrider and noblewoman. She marries Daemon and they live together happily while she raises her twin daughters, Rhaena and Baela. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the easiest fate when it comes to childbirth — but suffice it to say she doesn’t go down quietly.

Still, Velaryons became major players in the game of thrones fairly early on by allying themselves with the Targaryens. As per episode 1's opening text, we know that Daenerys Targaryen, AKA Game of Thrones' Mother of Dragons (played by Emilia Clarke), was born 172 years after the events of House of the Dragon kick off. That makes her the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Rhaenyra and the – deep breath – great-great-great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Aegon the Conqueror. After he assassinated his lover/unknown-aunt Dany, Jon was exiled back into the Night's Watch, and later travelled with the Wildlings to the land north of the Wall. There's currently a Jon Snow sequel series in development with Harington returning, so we may learn what's next for the hero in the future.
